Betty Bacall (born Betty Joan Perske) was a part-time model. In 1943, she got a major breakthrough, posing for the cover of Haper’s Bazaar. Slim Hawks (wife of Hollywood director Howard Hawks) saw the mysterious looking Bacall on the cover of Bazaar and showed it to her husband. Howard Hawks wanted to make a star, and he chose Betty Bacall.
He flew her to Hollywood, signed her to a personal contract, and directed her in her first motion picture- To Have and Have Not- starring the one and only Humphrey Bogart.
He also gave her a new name.. Lauren.
